Competition instructions Jukola village Competition centre Terrain Restricted area Courses Course planner's info Competition map Old maps Training COMPETITION INSTRUCTIONS RULES The rules of The Finnish Orienteering Federation (SSL) and in parts, of The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) apply together with the instructions given by the organizers. TERRAIN The size of the competition area is 13 km2. The competition terrain is altering forest ground, with a few fields, a narrow river and a few roads. Height difference is approximately 70 meters, individual rise being 45 meters at the highest. The base of the ground is mainly good and fast. Vegetation, which consists of mainly pine- and spruce forests, is of different ages and altering in its thickness. SPIKES FORBIDDEN Competitors are not allowed to use spike shoes. Dobb shoes are allowed. FORBIDDEN AREAS There are forbidden areas that are marked on the map as well as those that are marked with "no admittance"-band in the terrain. Competitors must go round these areas. Forbidden areas are controlled. COMPETITION MAP AND CONTROL DESCRIPTIONS Competition map is a six-colored orienteering map in the scale 1:10 000, with contour interval of 5 meters. Open rock areas are shown on the map. The map has been printed in March 2005 and it is in a plastic folder. Control descriptions are printed on the map. The size of the map is A3 in the Venla relay, and A3 or A2 in the Jukola relay, depending on the leg. The maps can be seen on the warm-up area, which only competitors waiting for their start are allowed to enter. Old maps of the competition area are displayed on the notice board. TEAM COMPOSITION The team composition for both relays must be registered by 11.00 on Saturday, June.18. The team composition can be entered on the internet www.jukola2005.net using the passwords received on the registration. The form can be printed from Jukola 2005 homepage, or it can be ordered from Sippu-Jukola 2005 office. The form must be returned to the Info. The team compositions are displayed from 12.00 on Saturday, June 18, on the result board and on the Jukola 2005 homepage. Changes for the composition, caused by some compelling reason, that occur after the dead-line of registration, must be notified to the Info at least half an hour before the start of the competition in question. The Senior Event Adviser will either approve or reject the changes having considered the presented reasons. COMPETITON MATERIAL The competition material is handed out at the team material distribution stand near the Info on Friday, June 17 from 14.00 until 22.00 and on Saturday, June 18 from 8.00 in the morning. The clubs must present the club material card in order to collect the team material. The team compositions must also be registered. The competition material includes program books ( two per team ), the competition number bibs and safety pins, checking labels for emits, the rented emit cards, notes and possible additions to the competition instructions and a map return card ( one per club ). The map return card is in the envelope of the clubs first team (Venla or Jukola). More competition programs are available at the material distribution stand. COMPETITION NUMBERS The competition numbers are based on the results of the Venla and Jukola relays of 2004. The first team of the club uses the smallest number. The number bib must be visible during the whole leg. The number will be checked at the entrance. The bar code sticker must be protected before it is read at the entrance, and the information is transferred to the result system. EMIT PUNCHING SYSTEM Each team must have at least three emit cards. The same emit card can be used both in the Venla and Jukola relays. The same card cannot be used in consecutive legs or within different teams in the same relay. The team material includes checking labels for each team member. The label must be attached to the emit card so that the yellow side (the text side) is visible. Each competitor must mark the checking slip with the abbreviations JU (for Jukola) or VE (for Venla), and with the number of the emit card he or she uses. In the competition centre, close to the entry gate, there is a clearing point and a model control, where each competitor may study the punching system and test their card. More detailed instructions can be found at the model control. The numbers of the emit cards will be registered to the result system in the competition area, after the entry gate, when entering the start- and changeover area. The cards are then cleared in the path leading to the start and changeover. After that, the competitors are not allowed to change their emit cards. After the changeover and finish, each competitor's emit cards are read at the discharge point. If any confusion is detected, the competitor will be guided to a separate checking point (the Wailing Wall). The rented emit cards must be returned to the emit discharge point when the team/club no longer needs them. CONTROLS AND PUNCHING Controls are identical to the model control. The controls must be visited in numerical order. The serial number and code number of the control are printed on the map next to the control ring. For example: The last control for the incoming competitors is in the finishing area, where the changeover punch will be done. START The start is situated in the competition centre. Entry to the starting area takes place only through the entry gate next to the finishing area, from where there is a marked route leading to the start area. The competitors cannot leave the start area after the emit cards have been cleared. There is a toilet in the start area. Information on mass start follow. Venla relay: The entrance gate for the first leg of the Venla relay will be opened at 14.50. The competitor must be at the gate at 15.10 at the latest. The competitors will move to the maps according to instructions given by the announcer. The map can be touched only after permission has been given by the announcer, and it can be detached after the starting shot has been fired at 15.30. Jukola: The entrance gate for the first leg of the Jukola relay will be opened at 22.15. The competitor must be at the gate at 22.40 at the latest. The competitors will move to the maps according to instructions given by the announcer. The map can be touched only after permission has been given by the announcer and it can be detached after the starting shot has been fired at 23.00. Control of the start: The starts are videotaped and teams making a false start or causing one will be disqualified. CHANGEOVER Only competitors with a number bib are allowed to enter the changeover area, which must be entered through the entry gate. Incoming competitors can be seen from the changeover area about 500 meters before the changeover takes place. Competitors will choose the box according to the signs, punch, and hand over his or her unfolded map to the official's table. The competitor then continues to the numbered map fence, and picks up the map for the next leg with his or her team's number. The competitor takes the map to the runner of the next leg waiting at the numbered map fence. The number bib must be visible when the competitor arrives to the map fence. The map can be detached by lifting it upwards. If the map has been taken by some other team, the competitor must notify the map fence supervisor immediately. The competitor will be guided to the reserve map stand at the end of the changeover fence. The competitor will receive a new map, but the time loss will not be compensated. Incoming competitors can leave the changeover area only through the emit discharge point. The changeover times and positions of the teams are determined according to the changeover punch. Notice the intersecting traffic on both sides of the changeover fence! At the changeover area, there is a computer, from where the competitor can see where and when his or her teammate has made the last online-punch. FINISH There is a marked route to the finish from the last control of the final leg. The finishing order of the first 100 teams will be determined according to the crossing of the finish line. The finishing time will be determined according to the finishing punch made immediately after crossing the finish line. The emit cards of the first 100 teams will be read immediately after the crossing of the finish line at a separate checkpoint in the finish box. The finishing order of the rest of the teams will be determined according to their finishing punches. After the finishing punch, all competitors will hand over their maps to the officials. The anchors of the teams with positions 101 and higher will be guided to the ordinary emit checkpoint and out of the finishing area. REFRESHMENT POSTS AND FIRST AID Refreshment posts and first aid stations in the terrain are marked on the map with the same color as the course according to description. The refreshment posts situated at the controls are marked on the control descriptions. The refreshments will be fresh water and Dexal sports drink. There is a first aid station at the competition centre and a refreshment post near the competitors' entrance and exit gate. There is a first aid point at the changeover. TEAM MANAGERS Team managers are not allowed to enter the start and changeover area. SERVICE TENTS The club's service tents can be put up only to the areas reserved in advance and pointed out by the organizers. The 100 best teams of Jukola 2004 have priority to the places on the front row, other clubs' places will be reserved in registration order. The passage ways must be kept clear. INTERVIEWS The winning teams are asked to gather for interviews according to instructions that will be given to the anchor of the team. Interviews of the first legs will take place at the changeover fence, in the competition studio and in the space reserved for the press. THE MESSAGE OF THE JUKOLA RELAY The traditional message of the Jukola relay will be read and the object of the message revealed in the vicinity of the finishing area shortly after the winning Jukola team finishes. RESULTS The results are presented at the result board. Any confusion or unclarity regarding the results must be reported to the Wailing Wall. Disqualifications will be displayed on the result board, and, in case of the top teams, announced. Official results with intermediate times will be published on the Sippu-Jukola homepage www.Jukola2005.net. Unofficial results will be continuously updated during the competition to the homepage. THE WAILING WALL The settlement point (the Wailing Wall) situated near the changeover/finish area is open for complaints and settlements during the competition from Saturday 15.30 until Sunday 15.00. The team manager can access the settlement point escorted by an official through the entrance/exit gate. The possible protests and reports of wrongdoings are left at the Wailing Wall. PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONIES The 25 best teams in the Jukola relay and 15 best teams in the Venla relay will be awarded medals and plaquettes. The seven best teams in both relays will also receive special prizes. All prizes will be awarded on the Jukola stage. The prize-giving ceremony for the Venla relay will take place on Saturday June 18 immediately after the traditional Jukola celebration which stats at 20.00. The prize-giving ceremony for the Jukola relay will take place on Sunday, June 19 at 08.00. Venla teams, who will receive a prize, are asked to arrive to the seats preserved to them, next to the Jukola stage, before the start of the Jukola celebration, at 19.50 at the latest. Accordingly, the Jukola teams receiving a prize are asked to arrive to the immediate vicinity of the Jukola stage on Sunday June 19, by 07.45. RETURNING OF THE MAPS The distribution of the maps starts on Sunday in the team material distribution stand near the Info at 09.00. All maps for the club (maps for both Venla and Jukola teams) will be handed out in return for the map return card which can be found in the envelope of the clubs first team (Venla or Jukola). The relay-like competition will finish and the changeover will be closed around 19.15. The teams which have not finished by 19.15 can take part on the mass start for legs 2 - 4, which takes off from the map fence at 19.30. After the emit cards have been registered and cleared, the competitors will move to the map fence according to instructions given by the announcer. Teams making a false start will be disqualified. Dispersion on all legs. Approximately 700 to 1000 meters of marked route is included in the course length. Competitors born 1989 -1990 can run legs 4, 5 and 6. Competitors born 1988 and earlier can run all legs. The sun sets on Saturday at 22.49 and rises on Sunday at 03.54.
The Start of the Competition, Closing of Changeover and Mass Start. The competition starts on Saturday night at 23.00 with a mass start. The relay-like competition will finish and the changeover will be closed on Sunday at 08.45. The teams which have not finished by 08.45 can take part on the mass start for legs 2 - 7, which takes off from the map fence at 09.00. If a competitor taking part in the mass start does not have an emit card, he can collect one from the emit registration. After the emit cards have been registered and cleared, the competitors will move to the map fence according to instructions given by the announcer. Teams making a false start will be disqualified. The finish for the Jukola relay will close at 14.00. DROP OUTS AND DISQUALIFIED Disqualified and drop out competitors perform a normal changeover. These teams can continue the relay to the finish. If a disqualified or a drop out team is less than an hour behind the leading team, their relay will be interrupted and the next competitor can leave the emit discharge point accordingly:

The team will be classified as a drop out, if the competitor notifies the officials at the emit discharge point. Otherwise the team will be classified as disqualified. The injured competitors that have dropped out in the terrain can hand out their maps to the first aid personnel. There will be notification about these teams at the board of the changeover box. Teams in question can continue their relay from the next leg and start at a most convenient time of those shown above. Competitor waiting for a start of this kind must report at the Wailing Wall 10 minutes before the start, where he will receive more information.
To the final results, these teams will be marked as drop outs or disqualified.
